This temple is said to have no beginning and no end.  Moreshwara Temple is one of the three most important places for Shree Ganesha. It is said that the demon Sindhu was killed here by Lord Ganesha.

The Story Goes….

Ganesha, the protector of the universe, was born to Parvati after her long meditation in Lenyadri which is another Ashtavinayak site for pilgrimage. Lord Ganesha born in Lenyadri and soon came to be known as Mayureshwar or Moreshwara since his mode of transport become a peacock.

Ugra, the wife of Chakrapani, the king of Mithila, conceived but has to abandon the fetus in the Sindhu Ocean. From this, a son was born. The ocean returned him to his father who named him Sindhu. As a boon, Sun God gave him a full bowl of Amrit or elixir of life making him very strong. Soon he started to terrorize the three worlds, heaven, earth and hell.

Terrorized, Gods went to Ganesha for help. In the battle that followed, Lord Ganesha took out the Amrit bowl from Sindhu by cutting his body thus killed him and his associates.

It is Lord Brahma who is believed to have created the Moreshwara Temple and married off his daughter’s Siddhi and Buddhi to Lord Ganesha.

The deity inside the Moreshwara Temple is very attractive. The statue is sitting position facing east while the trunk is turning towards left. Most of the time glittering stonesare embedded in him. On orange colour, which is the idols colour, these stones give the idol a royal look.

Since it is said that Lord Brahma has married off his daughters Siddhi and Buddhi here, so one can see their brass idols on either side of Ganesha. Mooshaka (Rat) and Mayura (Peacock) can be seen in front of the Idol.

The entire temple is built as if it is a small castle. Outside decoration is coloured in light yellow and pink. On the outside of the temple, idols of small elephants and dancers are made giving the temple a well-designed look.
