Broccoli – Has many health benefits

Broccoli is one of the healthiest veggies in the world but disliked by kids. Broccoli belongs to the Cruciferous vegetable family which includes Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, etc. These vegetables contain full of nutrients for few calories.

For those people who like to eat healthy foods, vegetables like Broccoli must be placed on top of the list. Many don’t like the taste of Broccoli but then it all depends on how you prepare it and include it in your meal.

Healthy benefits of Broccoli

All of us know that eating fruits and vegetables of all kinds are good for health. They cut the risk of poor health conditions arising out of the modern lifestyle.

Consumption of Broccoli decreases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It also promotes hair and complexion, increased vigor and reduces weight.


Broccoli fights cancer

Eating a good amount of cruciferous vegetables like Broccoli, lower the risk of lung and colon cancer. It is observed that Sulforaphane, the sulfur-containing compound, responsible for its bitter taste, is what gives these vegetables their cancer-fighting ability.

Because of this ability, these types of vegetables will serve a very important part in cancer treatment in the future. At present, Sulforaphane is being studied for its ability to delay or slow cancer cells. Results are promising.

Broccoli has vitamin folate, which decreases the risk of breast cancer in women. If this folate is taken adequately in diet, it can defend against stomach, pancreatic, and cervical cancers.

It is still not known why folate is so beneficial to us but it is believed that folate as some role in DNA and RNA production and prevents mutations.

Broccoli strengthens bone

One cup of chopped Broccoli provides enough micrograms of vitamin K for daily need. Taking adequate amount of vitamin K improves bone health. This happens because it improves calcium absorption. Less vitamin K means a higher risk of bone fracture.

Stay healthy and young

Broccoli is rich in antioxidant vitamin C which when eaten in natural form, can help to fight skin damage caused by sun and pollution. It also reduces wrinkles and increases glow on skin.

Apart from vitamin C, Broccoli also provides vitamin A and vitamin E, both of which are also essential for healthy-looking skin.

Broccoli for better digestion and detoxification

Broccoli has natural fiber which prevents constipation, keeps healthy digestive tract thus lowering the risk of colon cancer. Dietary fiber may also be useful for regulating the immune system.

How to include Broccoli in diet

Ideally, Broccoli is disliked universally by all because of its bitter taste. But that bitter taste can be removed or at least reduced to quite an extent.

First, store the unwashed young Broccoli in perforated plastic bags in the refrigerator. Wash Broccoli right before eating, else if washed and stored it will develop fungus and also become limp. Flavor of Broccoli continues to reduce the older it gets.

Pieces of Broccoli can be added in rolls, pasta, pizza, salad, etc.
